What made you say ‘yes’ to Rangoon?
VISHAL BHARDWAJ’s direction was a very attractive aspect. He is on every actor’s wish list. This is the first time he is making a love story with Rangoon so naturally the girl in the film has a central character; it’s a triangle love story. So this was the perfect reason for me to do the film.
The best compliment you have received for the film so far?
Everyone has given me lots of good compliments; I got a lot of calls and messages. Anurag Basu, who is my mentor and gave me the first break, called me and said he loved me in the film.
Is your character inspired by Fearless Nadia?
Like fearless Nadia there have been other action actresses that time, the film is not based on any particular actress’ life. If you say this is Fearless Nadia’s biopic then I would say Vishal sir took all the action heroines who were celebrated in those days. That time they all were praised, so he was very fascinated with all of them. My character is known as Jaanbaaz Julia. But in the film my character is not Jaanbaaz at all; she is totally dependent on her lover, whatever he says she does it. In the end Julia becomes Jaanbaaz, so that’s what the is story all about.
How much do you connect with Julia’s character?
Somewhere we all can connect to the film because in life love makes you helpless, so in the film Rusi Billimoria’s (Saif Ali Khan) love makes her helpless and pulls her down, but when she meets Nawab (Shahid Kapoor) and falls in love with him, he gives her the flight, their love is Sufi. His love helps her emerge as a winner in life and she becomes fearless.
How are Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor as a person?
SAIF is very chivalrous and SHAHID has a boyish charm despite being mature.
Do film releases add pressure on you?
I think films add pressure to me. I remember few years ago I used to not care of film releases, but now with every film the pressure is building on me. Now Rangoon is releasing and I already have so much stress about how will people perceive. And this is the first big budget film I am doing. So I want a profitable proposition.
What works in Bollywood – talent, luck or a star boyfriend?
Eventually, only talent works. You can get success initially with all the lobbying, but that doesn’t work for life. Your talent only takes you ahead. Like IRRFAN KHAN for example has done phenomenal job, he has struggled so hard to achieve this success, so if you have talent nobody can stop you.
Are you worried of losing the Queen title?
I did Queen so that is why thodha zyaada Queen hogaya. I don’t have any fear. We do films and get good titles. Like in Rangoon my name is Jaanbaaz Julia, so if I will be called that toh muje aur zyada achcha lagega. I want to do certain characters which people remember. I remember earlier people used to call me Fashion girl and I was like arey yaar after that I have done 25 films. So as an actor you want a role that should leave an impression. Queen has become so famous that people don’t want to forget that. I feel after Queen I haven’t been so impactful but I hope after this film people call me Jaanbaaz Julia.
